Week 1
Introduction to Venoms! There are many venomous creatures in the world that can potentially cause illness in our patients. This week, we will look at the types of toxins we are likely to encounter in our day-to-day practice life. We will look at essential first aid advice, and the things you as nurses need to know about what can go wrong with envenomed patients.
Week 2
Management of patients with envenomation. Learn the best way to support patients with envenomation – be it from a snake, a tick, a puffer fish or a spider! What premedication is needed before antivenin, how do you know when a patient needs more antivenin, how to monitor your patients and more!
Week 3
The poisonous chemicals – part 1. This week we will teach you about toxins causing seizures – how to recognize them, how to treat them, and how to support the patients that eat them. We will cover all you need to know as a nurse about things such as permethrin toxicity, organophosphate and Carbamate toxicity, chocolate toxicity, illicit drug toxicity and more!
Week 4
The poisonous chemicals – part 2. This week, we will look at chemicals that cause irritations, organ damage – including antifreeze, paracetamol, the “pet friendly” insecticides and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. We will also look at the exciting world of bleeding disorders caused by rodenticides.

Critically ill patients are those patients that will often die without our help. These patients require the nursing staff to be monitoring their every body function, and responding to body function tests when they are abnormal. This 5 week course will provide information on the care of the seriously ill patient, including the selection and use of various monitoring tools, and specialized care of individual patient organ systems.

Week 1
Care of the critical patient part 1: cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Following on from the acute care of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in the Emergency medicine module, the critical care module will look at ongoing monitoring and treatment of patients with critical illness, including blood pressure measurement, pulse oximetry, blood gases, blood lactate and more. We will look at how to recognize cardiac and respiratory dysfunction in the critically ill patient and what to do about it!
Week 2
Care of the critical patient: Part 2 – neurological system. Critically ill patients frequently have abnormal mentation – you will learn how to recognize abnormal mentation, and what the appropriate intervention steps are.
Week 3
Care of the critical patient: Part 3 – The gut and nutritional support. The intestines and feeding are commonly forgotten in critically ill patients – but proper nutrition and gut care can improve survival in sick patients by up to 85%. You will learn what to feed, when to feed it, how much to feed, and what to do if things go wrong
Week 4
Care of the critical patient: Part 4 – Critical care of the Kidney - the kidney is essential for life. Techniques of monitoring kidney function, urinary catheter care and hygiene, calculating urine output, and when to become alarmed will all be discussed in detail
Week 5
Care of the critical patient: Part 5 – Care of wounds, postural care and support, disinfection and cleanliness, and all those blood tests – what to do with the data you collect? This week will provide all of the answers, plus a flow-sheet to make your life easier when you tackle those really sick patients
